The best space saving furniture

Nowadays, it appears that plenty of space and room “to swing a cat” are ideas lost in the past. In fact, if you live in a modest city apartment or small house then you can’t fail to notice that property is not as spacious as it used to be – unless you have a couple of million pounds to spend on a riverside London flat.

However there are some ingenious furniture designs which make the most of small spaces.  One of our favourites is the small dining table with 4 chairs which can be completely pushed under the table.  Or the outside patio furniture with 4 or 6 chairs but which has space underneath each chair to slot a stool for use by extra guests.  Beds with easily accessible storage drawers underneath are a necessity for small places.  The best ones have drawers of varying sizes enabling occupants to store large items like extra bedding and small items like ties and socks.  If your flat is compact but with high ceilings, like many flats which have been converted from old Victorian properties, then you could consider having a loft bed, located just a few feet below your ceiling. Set spotlights into the smooth underside of the bed to create a false, low ceiling over a study area or a child’s play space. For the kitchen, think about installing some pull-out work surfaces which will give you a bigger area to work in when you are cooking or preparing food.
