When it comes time to start a new DIY project, it can be reasonably easy to choose the cheapest wood available to construct a fireplace cover or garden posts. It’s something that most people do at least once, and we’ve all, at some point, thought it a terrible decision. The most common reason for regretting that decision is twice a year later, when the pine has warped beyond use, or the posts have rotted and fallen. There is no doubt that oak is costlier than wood of other types, but woods of other types do not offer their value like oak does. Oak has the advantage of lasting beyond the will to serve it’s purpose. When thinking of oak wood supply, UK Oak is the most convenient along the supply line. Oak is a far superior choice wood, that is also available for a versatile usage.
If you want to know one of the different things oak will do to a room, the fireplace mantel is a good starting place. An oak beam at the top of a fireplace looks better than anything veneered could ever be, and they are heavy. Anyone who has tried to carry one through the front door will tell you they need help. Oak beams can be left a little rustic or a little more modern depending on the room, and if the home is older, a more rustic beam is better so the beam won’t look out of place.
Outside, oak looks a little different. The wood will naturally weather to a silver to a soft gray. There are mixed opinions on how it looks. If you don’t like it as gray, then luckily it is not a difficult task to keep it looking a warm golden brown.
It looks a little different with furniture. An oak flat pack will look that way for the rest of its life, but a cheap flat pack table can look just as good the first day as it can the last. Scuffs and blemishes on oak furniture actually tend to look more appealing rather than less.
When getting posts and gates, it is best to request the right grade for outdoor use. Some oak is sold green and will shift a little during drying. Your supplier can usually advise on this when you order.
